2007 was a very exciting year for the DC Committee. We launched new projects on advocacy – by supporting the Paul Simon Water for the Poor Act – and on outreach – by promoting Water For People’s message through presentations and events. We also learned – first hand in Holly’s case ! – how Water For People’s country work is directly improving the quality of life in communities that lack access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation.

Some of the major events this year were:

  • Dance For Water” benefit featuring Daniel Burkholder/The PlayGround's performance of "My Ocean is Never Blue"
  • Letter writing campaign to encourage dedicated financial support from the U.S. government for water projects in developing countries
  • DC premier of Running Dry: A Call to Action on the Global Water Crisis with Jim Thebaut…featuring Jane “Dr. Quinn” Seymour !
  • World Water Day 2007 : Water Advocates Press Conference, presentation to EPA’s Emerging Leaders Network , and Starbucks/Ethos Walk For Water
  • Blue Planet Run launch event…and running a mile with them on the Mall
  • Water For People Country Scoping trip to Kenya (Cynthia) and Water For People WaterCorps Trip to Malawi (Holly)
  • Hosting guest speakers on Climate Change & Water Resources, NRDC’s Global Safe Drinking Water Project, Water & Sanitation in Banda Aceh, Water For People’s work in Malawi ’s Chikwawa district, and Playpumps International projects in Kenya
  • Saying goodbye to Steve Werner and welcoming Colleen Stiles as Water For People’s CEO
  • A special event at the Polish Embassy to promote a future big screen release of Running Dry
  • The “ Safe Drinking Water to Children in Africa ” reception sponsored by Proctor & Gamble and the Kenyan Ambassador
  • Delivering o utreach presentations to Rotary Clubs in the DC area and p ublishing a new poster to promote Water For People
  • Attending Water For People events at WEFTEC’07 and Water For People’s Annual Meeting
  • Happy Hours with Razoo Brewing for Good and with Meet, Drink & Be Merry
  • Participating in the launch event for the National Academy of Science’s www.drinking-water.org resource
  • Practicing dance steps with Carlos Gutierrez and Kathryn Abdul-baki during the “ Salsa For Water” fundraiser at Habana Village !
